St. John’s partners with other congregations to provide warm beds, warm meals, and a warm welcome to homeless families in the Roanoke Valley. Offer the ministry of hospitality by helping prepare and serve a meal or the ministry of presence by staying overnight with our guests. Contact Gates DeHart at gdehart1@cox.net.
Family Promise's history, from its website:
"Family Promise is a program designed to help families with children who are experiencing homelessness. A network of 31 faith communities and over 1,000 volunteers provide temporary housing and meals for up to 4 families at a time (maximum 14 people). While families are in our program, they receive full-time case management to assist with overcoming the causes that led to homelessness. The families establish goals for employment, housing, education, and child care. Through a safe, nurturing environment, families can work on these goals to lead them to permanent housing and future success. Hospitality, a large support system of volunteers, and new life skills enable over 87% of our families to move to and maintain permanent housing. Family Promise operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and only serves families with children."
Family Promise of Greater Roanoke is one of more than 200 affiliates across the country.
