New to St. John's?

Greetings from Roanoke's Downtown Episcopal Church

St. John's Episcopal Church in downtown Roanoke is a welcoming Christian family.  Members of the parish come from all parts of town and many different backgrounds.  We seek to proclaim God's love in Jesus Christ our Lord and to witness to His presence in our world through worship, study, community outreach, and fellowship.

We extend a warm welcome to any and all who want to experience Christ in a more rewarding way as we seek to "know Him more clearly, to love Him more dearly, and to follow Him more nearly."

We encourage you to find out more about St. John's Episcopal Church by completing our response form or by calling our parish office at 540-343-9341.

We hope you will join us in our exciting life together.

St. John's - Past and Present

Founders of St. John's over 150 years ago could hardly have forseen the changes that would result in our thriving downtown parish.  In 1992 we celebrated the centennial of our current church building, listed as a national landmark.  Little could those 217 communicants in 1892 have imagined that St. John's would become the largest parish in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia with nearly 1600 baptized members.  Little could they have imagined that St. John's would be situated at the busiest intersection in Roanoke.

Yet those same founders were visionaries, and St. John's also continues to look ahead to the needs of the future.   As St. John's continues to grow, so do the needs for the enlarged facilities that extend a warm welcome to all who pass by.  In May of 1998, we expanded our Parish house to support our after-school Community Youth Program and to provide opportunities for members of the community who are in need.  This is an exciting time as God leads us into our second century at the corner of Jefferson Street and Elm Avenue.  We hope you will join us as we move forward.
